The active shooter drill was held on Monday, Oct 30 at Indian Rock Village on Dave Creek Parkway. The operation started at 2 p.m. but nobody had a clue as to what was going to happen. The staff at IRV were tested to see how they would react in a real life situation.
“The active shooter drill went off surprisingly well. We have regular drills for fire safety and tornadoes, but this one took things to a whole new level. I was in the middle of it as an observer and even though I knew we had a drill planned, it caught me by surprise too when the shooting started. The officer who played the shooter got in very easily and just blended in without suspicion, but staff reacted very quickly as the drill started. They called 911 and went into their rehearsed positions as they had been trained to do. The FFB police were there in minutes and took action very quickly and disarmed the shooter and cleared the rest of the building. As soon as it was safe the EMT’s came in to treat the gunshot victims. Afterwards we staged an evacuation for a number of nursing home and assisted living residents. They were taken off site to give everyone the feel of what that required. This drill could not have been done without the great planning and input from the Fairfield Bay Police, Fire, EMT, Office of Emergency Management, and 911. We so appreciate them for keeping everyone at Indian Rock Village safe and secure,” said facility owner, Ed Holman.
“The drill went off as planned and without any serious issues. All departments coordinated well with each other and a debreifing will take place on Thursday, Nov 9 to discuss where improvements can be made. The residents that were transported over to the Fellowship Hall at Kirk of the Hills, were treated very well and made comfortable during their stay,” said Jerry Thompson OEM Coordinator.
